Trump administration enabled Romney and never-Trumpers. Now it’s time to clean house.

NBCNews THINK, February 12, 2020

In the days following President Donald Trump’s impeachment acquittal, Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah — the only Republican to vote with Democrats to convict the president in the Senate trial — has been the object of almost daily scorn. Over the weekend, Trump singled out Romney in a long tweetstorm, claiming that he “hurt some very good Republican Senators, and he was wrong about the Impeachment Hoax.”

Earlier in the impeachment saga, Trump had directed his anger at officials who testified against him during the House impeachment inquiry, calling them never-Trumpers. They included career diplomats William Taylor and George Kent and former White House aides Jennifer Williams and Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. Last Friday, Vindman was fired from his position at the National Security Council.

Few observers are surprised by Trump’s fury at those who participated in the effort to oust him from office. Most, however, have failed to notice one of the biggest ironies of the Trump administration: It has repeatedly endorsed, hired and elevated critics and opponents.

  1. Mitt Romney was the only Republican Senator who voted his conscience. Trump remains an impeached, and guilty, man. He should not have been allowed to continue in office. So many things wrong there, not the least of which is that the Senate is “required” to try the President, and a “trial” must, to fulfill the legal definition, contain witnesses, evidence and at least some questioning. Trump cannot get people to work for him, because they recognize that he may fire them, without warning, or reason.
When I was in Hong Kong, half a century ago, I ran into the same sort of thing concerning the White men who were so much in power there. The bigotry extended beyond their private lives, and led to Chinese people not wanting anything to do with them. It was so bad that, as an American, I could feel the dislike, everywhere I went. Now it’s come down to Communist versus Freedom. I feel for those who want liberty, in Hong Kong, since the Chinese Government badly needs to remove it. Well, I guess Trump is their man, because no one hates the “Government of the people, by the people and for the people,” more than he does. He’s very much a “White” man in that way.
