Internet Finance in China, Risks to the Economy and Outbound Investment

China Takes Over the World,” RTHK Radio 3, March 8, 2014

China Takes Over the World is a show that explores the myriad issues related to China’s rising economic, political and military influence in the world.

In the latest episode, the show speaks to Dr. Nicholas Lardy, the Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. We discuss the new online money market funds offered by China’s Internet giants, the push-back from traditional banks, the risks posed by local government debt and shadow banking to the broader Chinese economy, and next steps for financial liberalization in China.

In the second half of the show, we chat with Dr. Derek Scissors, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, about China’s vast overseas investments. Dr. Scissors talks about the trends in Chinese outbound investments, the countries and sectors favored by Chinese companies, the troubles they have encountered overseas, and whether Chinese state-owned conglomerates are immune to market forces when they go abroad.

Hosted by Ying Ma, China Takes Over the World airs at 8:30 a.m. every Saturday in Hong Kong on RTHK, the city’s public broadcast station. Previous episodes of the show are available via podcast on iTunes.
