Taiwan-China Relations/Why China Should “Shut Up”

China Takes Over the World, RTHK Radio 3, April 19, 2014

In its latest episode, China Takes Over the World is joined by the following guests.

  • Bruce Linghu, Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, former Director-General of North American Affairs of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Taiwan’s former ambassador to the Marshall Islands
  • Edward Luttwak, senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, and author of The Rise of China vs. the Logic of Strategy

Amb. Linghu talks about the recent student protests in Taiwan known as the Sunflower Movement, Taiwan’s growing economic and cultural ties with Mainland China, and Taiwan’s territorial claims in the East China Sea and South China Sea. Elsewhere, Amb. Linghu has emphasized that Taiwan advocates a peaceful approach to resolving maritime disputes with its neighbors.

Dr. Luttwak talks about grand strategy and reactions from the United States and China’s neighbors to China’s rise. Dr. Luttwak argues that Beijing should simply “shut up” about its territorial ambitions, forego military expansion, and grow its economy instead of needlessly alarming China’s neighbors and the United States.

Hosted by Ying Ma, China Takes Over the World is a program about China’s growing economic, political and military power. It airs at 8:30 a.m. every Saturday in Hong Kong on RTHK Radio 3, the English channel of the city’s public broadcast station. Previous episodes of the show are available on podcast via iTunes.
